Copulatory Mounting
Overview and Meaning
Copulatory mounting is a Sexual behavior that results in copulation or an unsuccessful attempt at mating.
Description
Once a male has successfully pursued and motivated a female mate, he will attempt to mount her hindquarters. The male mouse will mount the female from the rear. He will then grasp her flanks with his forepaws (Latham & Mason, 2004). If she is receptive, he will then begin to make palpitations and pelvic thrusts.
Copulatory mounting can be distinguished from mounting for the purposes of threat by the sequence of behaviors before and after mounting occurs and the presence of breeding pairs.
